Job Summary

The Water Well Driller Helper provides critical hands-on support to the Lead Driller during the setup, construction, and completion of residential, commercial, and agricultural water wells. This entry-level position focuses on loading materials, preparing drilling fluids, handling casing pipes, and maintaining site safety. The successful candidate will maintain a strong willingness to learn on the job, execute physical tasks safely, care for equipment, and ensure absolute compliance with site guidelines and groundwater protection standards under direct supervision.

Essential Functions

Rig Setup & Teardown: Assist the driller in maneuvering, positioning, and leveling the drilling rig; stabilize equipment and prepare the site layout for daily drilling activities.

Material & Tool Handling: Load and unload heavy materials, including PVC/steel casings, drill strings, screen systems, and gravel packs, utilizing hand and power tools securely.

Drilling Fluid Management: Safely mix, monitor, and maintain drilling mud and fluids to support continuous circulation, stabilize boreholes, and clear subterranean debris.

Routine Maintenance & Cleaning: Conduct pre-shift and post-shift cleanings of drilling machinery, hand tools, and support vehicles; assist with minor field adjustments like changing filters, hoses, and gaskets.

Well Completion Support: Assist with the installation of well casings, screen pipes, sanitary grouting seals, and pump systems under the driller's precise direction.

Site Restoration & Cleanup: Clear debris, manage drill cuttings, secure the borehole location, and restore the job site to prevent local runoff and environmental issues.

Workplace Safety Execution: Utilize all mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), recognize potential job site hazards (e.g., overhead utilities, shifting loads), and report any immediate equipment abnormalities to the Lead Driller.

Work Environment & Physical Demands

Physical Ability: Heavy physical labor required; must have the capacity to routinely lift, carry, and manipulate tools or casing pieces weighing up to 75 pounds for extended periods.

Conditions: Ability to work outdoors continuously in all types of regional weather conditions (heat, rain, mud, cold) and tolerate high-noise field environments.

Availability: Willingness to work flexible hours, accommodate project overtime demands, and travel daily to varied job locations.

Job Requirements & Qualifications

Education: High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).

Age Requirement: Must be at least 18 years of age.

Experience: No prior experience required; comprehensive on-the-job training is fully provided for candidates eager to enter the groundwater trade. Mechanical, construction, or landscaping backgrounds are a plus.

Licensing: Valid driver's license with a clean, satisfactory driving record is required. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B (or the ability to obtain one through company training) is highly preferred for driving support vehicles.

Core Skills & Knowledge

Mechanical Aptitude: Comfortable working with basic mechanical hand tools, power tools, and high-pressure fluid systems.

Teamwork & Collaboration: Excellent listening skills; able to follow exact spoken commands from the driller in fast-moving environments.

Situational Awareness: High attention to surroundings, moving heavy machinery components, and safety perimeter setups to prevent incidents.

Critical Competencies

Coachability: Demonstrates an active desire to absorb field training, learn hydrogeological drilling techniques, and advance into a future licensed driller career path.

Reliability & Dependability: Shows up on time for early morning rollouts, tracks field gear precisely, and accurately finishes task checklists without skipping steps.

Practical Problem Solving: Thinks quickly to help adjust mixtures or secure tools when ground formations change or mechanical issues surface.
